Sally Greaves-Lord designs large scale textile banners. Her richly coloured, subtly textured, multi-layered abstract images are created by hand.

'Out of a playful movement of elements whose interrelations are not immediately apparent, patterns arise which an observant and critical intellect can only evaluate afterwards. The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting out of inner necessity. Concepts are coined and negotiable values; images are life.'

‘I have loved making patterns with a passion since I was a child. It is a way of ordering and sorting things out. I notice patterns everywhere, in numbers and shapes and rhythms, in cities and landscapes and interiors’

She is inspired by the use of textiles in the films of director Akira Kurosawa. ‘Those amazing japanese banners are quite stunning; sensuous and billowing textiles, both a call to arms and an expression of something other-worldly’

Graduating from the Royal College of Art in the 1980s, she also works with architectural practices and interior designers on projects such as cinemas and nightclubs, schools, fashion shops, hospitals, domestic interiors and places of worship. Greaves-Lord’s work has been adapted for use within fashion, theatre, marketing, product design, flooring design, screen printed glass, tablelinen, giftware and murals.

Clients include Conran Associates, Issey Miyake, Durham Cathedral, Sheffield Cathedral, BUPA, St James’s Hospital [Leeds], the BBC and Virgin Records.
